An insight for teachers and professionals working with D/deaf children of British Pakistani Muslim heritage

Please join us on 19th March 2025 (4-4.30pm) for a free online event with guest presenter Azra Parveen. Azra, who is a Qualified Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People (QToD) and an Educational Audiologist, will provide an insight for ToDs and professionals working with D/deaf children of British Pakistani Muslim heritage.

  • Deaf children are more likely to be from a minority ethnic background (NDCS 2019)
  • There is a higher prevalence of deafness in Pakistani families, compared to White-British and Black families (NDCS 2019)
  • Around 90% British Pakistanis living in the UK outlined their religion as Islam (census 2011)

‘As we see more learners from British Pakistani Muslim backgrounds on our caseloads, learning what is important to these families is key to successful partnership working,’ says Azra.

This short session gives ToDs and other professionals an opportunity to develop greater cultural intelligence of the British Pakistani Muslim community by understanding how disability may be viewed, and why. Azra will talk about different family dynamics and explore cultural, religious, and ethnic identities. Lived experiences, tips and advice will be provided throughout the workshop for use when working with these families.
