Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and deafness – our new offer for the 2024/25 academic year From September 2024, our team of Education Advisors will be offering the following training options for professionals working with deaf children and young people with ASC.
We are delighted to offer a two-part online workshop on Social Stories™ with Nicky Wallace, Specialist Teacher for Autism, York Specialist Teaching Team. Social Stories™ were developed by Carol Gray in the early 1990s. The terms ‘social story’ and ‘social stories’ are trademarks originated and owned by Carol Gray.
Our workshops will look at how we can use Social Stories effectively with deaf children and young people.
Session 1: Thursday 7th November 2024 4-5pm via TEAMs – SOLD OUT
- What are Social Stories and why do we use them?
- The basic rules of how to write a Social Story
- How to share and read Social Stories with a child
- Discussion around issues specific to delivering Social Stories for deaf children and young people
- This session will include some useful scaffolds and checklists for writing Social Stories
Session 2: Thursday 9th January 2025 4-5pm via TEAMs – SOLD OUT
- Attendees will have the chance to practise writing a Social Story
- We will use our Social Stories to practise editing, critiquing and developing our skills and understanding to write Social Stories™ for maximum effectiveness

Deafness and Autism Spectrum Condition networking group This group was relaunched in 2023 and is open to any professional working with deaf children and young people. We meet each term for an hour on TEAMs. The group provides a platform for sharing good practice, asking questions, discussing concerns and supporting each other in our professional roles. All are very welcome.
ASC and deafness – a half-day online conference We would like to offer a half-day online conference that will look at sessions on a variety of topics around ASC and deafness. Sessions will be run by professionals in the field of deafness and ASC. Topics we are currently looking to offer may include:
- Support strategies for deaf children and young people with ASC
- Establishing effective multi-agency
- Working with children and young people pre- and post-diagnosis of ASC
- Managing Sensory Processing needs
- Supporting children and young people with ASC with their technology
