Ewing Foundation’s first bite-size of 2025 will be presented by Beth Kilmartin, a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with 24 years’ experience. Beth’s half-hour online presentation (on Teams) is called: ‘Research to practice – working with families of deaf children who speak more than one language’. It will be held on Wednesday 5th February, 4-4.30pm.
Since 2011, Beth has led specialist services for babies, children, and young people with deafness within the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust in Oldham and Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
In 2021, Beth was awarded a NIHR Pre-Doctoral Fellowship and began developing research into deaf children with spoken language bi-/multi-lingualism. As part of this research Beth conducted an audit of the professional practice of Teachers of Deaf Children and Young People and Specialist Speech and Language Therapists working with children and families who speak more than one spoken language. More recently Beth conducted a systematic review alongside her fellowship supervisors investigating the barriers and facilitators affecting bi-/multi-lingual language outcomes for children who are deaf and are spoken language bi-/multi-linguals.
During Beth’s bite-size session, she will summarise her research findings and share some insights as to what best practice might look like for QTODs in the field when working with families speaking more than one spoken language.
We hope you’ll be able to join us for our first bite-size session of 2025.
